Along with the 850 Mal gave me; he also gave me a 700 dp that was totally disassembled. Even one quit once over showed that this carb was trashed. It looked to be sitting on a motor out in the rain for 15 years with the fuel slowly deteriorating into a nice goo.
Not to be deterred, I borrowed a 5 gallon can of Parts Dip from a friends shop and dunked this mess in there for the day. Even after soaking in that chemical gunk for a day, the base plate was still a total loss. The throttle shafts are throughly rusted and not movable. On top of that the previous owner broke all the screws to the throttle blades trying to remove them. The two metering blocks still had gas goo residue residing in the tiny holes, and as much as I tried blowing the crap out it was just wasn't going anywhere.
This is where most people would keep the good parts and toss the junk. I was planning this, but I remembered I have a nearly complete 650 dp that used to be on the car. The base plate was very usable as well as the metering blocks I bought new. So, I used the main body from the 700, along with the bowls, accelerator pumps (30 & 50 cc), and a new rebuild kit bought from Pep Boys.
I fully expected total failure, but now I am totally shocked as how well it now runs on the Impala. So much for keeping the good parts.
Here are the pics of it on the Impala. It's not pretty, but runs really well.
Some putz tried to epoxy around the secondary opening with can only be described as wood putty. I got most of that crap off.

Yep, I'm the totally ignorant putz. 18 months ago I put a new roller cam and Vic Jr heads on my Impala's 383. Today, while having a heart attack over possibly cross threading new plugs I discovered I've been running the wrong type of plugs all together all this time. Brilliant, huh? I've had the ole iron head tapered seat plugs, i.e. AC Delco's R45TS, or some shit, since day one 18 months ago. While using a flashlight and a little mirror I got a good look at the seat on the heads and guess what? It's not tapered. So, I stop everything, go upstairs, and grab my Edelbrock catalog and read it again. Right at the bottom of the page is a notation in fine print that says to run Champion RC12YC's. That's the type with the little gasket and flat seat and a long reach electrode.
Nice. So, off the parts store and get the right plugs.
The plug on the right is the one that's been on the car since March 07. The one on left is the type that's supposed to be in it.
Gee, I wonder why my old plugs still look brand new. Maybe, it's because the electrode was a 1/2 inch back in the hole and not anywhere near the combustion chamber?
People are telling me that I've been giving up anywhere from 50 to 100 hp running the wrong plugs. What's your guess?
I rebuilt the carb on Saturday and then gassed up the car. It's been running like totaly ass since. I've checked all the possiblities except the fuel filter being full of crap, or bad gas. Unless, I've lost a cylinder. Everything else has checked out. I'm too emotional right now to deal with this so the car goes back in the street until I can figure it out. _________________

Congrats, Scott!
Seeing that big'ol tank fly around that course put a big smile on my face for sure.
The best part?
To me(as an observer online), just the fact that someone that owns a '65 Impala SS is willing to get it out and DRIVE it/beat on it is the coolest thing alone....keep up the good work! _________________ if it don't bother me, it shouldn't bother you |

I also impressed Barry White of Barry's Speed Shop, the TV show Wrecks to Riches. His shop was sponsoring the autocross and co sponsoring the show. He came over after my fourth run and passed me two T shirts and a big thumbs up.
The run where I slide into the cones at the end had me screaming and the announcer crew running. _________________

Awesome and congrats, Scott! That's some cool stuff right there. I love seeing you actually beating on and enjoying that ol' Impy.
As tiresmoke said, "keep up the good work!".
P.S. Hey, did you ever manage to find out how much power was lost from having the wrong spark plugs? _________________ "The end is never as satisfying as the journey. To have achieved everything but to have done so without integrity and excitement is to have achieved nothing."- unknown |

No. There's some other issues I'm dealing with. Bad plug wires and I had bad gas. It's running good, but I need to get new wires on it. _________________

Damn, man. That sucks. I know we'll all look forward to some new numbers when you get those things sorted out. _________________ "The end is never as satisfying as the journey. To have achieved everything but to have done so without integrity and excitement is to have achieved nothing."- unknown |
