Here's the motor as it sits today. That's my 850 dp. I got rid of the huge off line stumble by changing the accelerator pump cam. It's drivable now. Drives good too, but is a bit on the rich side under full throttle even though the jet sizes are identical to what's in the 750 dp. I may have too big of secondary acc pump nozzle. Not sure what's on there. I'll have to look when I have some free time.
The Proform's front fuel bowl needs replacing. One of the bolt holes on the acc pump housing is stripped out. It drips a bit. The bowls are off my ancient 650 dp that is just a few parts now. Bamfster got most of the good stuff from that one.
I also need to replace my fuel log. All the carb changing has worn it out and the fittings are getting worn.
On another note. My plug wires only get warm while the 850 is on it. The car drives better at low rpm too. Sounds to me that the Proform 750 is lean on the primary side and could be causing the headers to get raging hot cooking the wires. _________________

In the ongoing quest to make the engine run to my standards; (Perfect would be a close aproximation for me.) I went after the distributor next.
First, pulling the cap and rotor. The rotor is almost new. The cap is been on there a couple years. Not bad, except a little carbon buildup on the taps. I scraped that crap off. The carbon bushing, whatever the hell it's called, between the coil and the rotor looks a little worn.
Here's the bushing I pulled out of the cap. I use the low resistance MSD one that came with coil. Standard ones get hot enough to melt the dist cap. It's a tad worn. Hmmmm.
Next, I pulled the dist out of the motor. The gear has some wear on it coming from serious amounts of play. Like .076 in of play in the dist shaft. Waaay too much. I need a gear and a shim kit pronto. The cam gear has no wear that I can see, so I'm guessing the dist gear's wear is from flopping around. Could explain idle speed issues.
One other thing I discovered is the wire harness for the dist to the MSD box. (This replaces the module.) One of the wires got crimped between the dist housing and the thingy that holds the cap to the dist. It's the dirty green wire with the issue.
Since any good parts store that would have a dist. gear and shim kit is closed on Sundays, I decided to fix the crimped wire. I used my handy-dandy-trunk mounted dist. stand (That's my trunk latch.) to hold the dist. while I fixed the wire. Here's the wire fixed with a connector and shrink wrap. The butane lighter got a bit too close and scorched it a tad.

you twist the wires with what they call a drain wire .... the drain wire insulates against ac voltage caused by rfi - radio frequency interference _________________

so, is the drain wire connected to anything, or just twisted with the other two? _________________ Garage cleaning....gas powered leaf blowers aren't just for the yard anymore...... |

the wires are not supposed to be twisted per MSD. I have a three wire harness extension and the wires in it are not twisted.
The car sat today as I couldn't find anyone who had shims in stock. I ended up ordering a set. _________________

Mine aren't either in the ole truck, and I haven't had any issues with radio interference with the ignition, or ignition interference with the radio.......I certainly believe MSD knows what they are talking about.
But.....I do have some radio (AM band) interference in my DD......might experiment a bit. _________________ Garage cleaning....gas powered leaf blowers aren't just for the yard anymore...... |

I've said before my Impala's stereo setup was pieced together over the years. I replaced stuff as it failed. It's kinda messy and unnecessarily complicated.
I got tired of listening to three of four speakers. I finally got around to fixing the wire that I accidentally pulled out of the amp. The reason why the right front speaker wasn't working. The amp is under the front passenger seat. So, I had to partially remove the seat to get to the wiring.
Here's the mess under the seat. That Sony amp on the left powers the front speakers. Someone gave it to me like 20 years ago and it's now in it's third car. The other little amp is a JBL 50 watt that powers the rears. I keep saying I'm going replace this mess with a single four channel, but they won't die.
The other thing that's been bugging me about the stereo is those jacked up speaker grilles on the rear deck. They were jacked up by me during installation. Please ignore the warped rear deck thing. I'm not. It's actually from Year One and was in the car when I bought it. I found the label while cutting holes for the speakers. It's been more warped each year. I got new grilles which I didn't use from the new speakers I installed on that POS in the background.
Here's the rest of the rear setup. A JL Audio 10 inch tube, a 200 watt amp of unknown brand, and a capasistor I disconnected because of it constantly screeching while recharging. This is the easiest way to work on all this crap. I'm not getting in the trunk and removing all the crap out of it unless absolutely necessary.
The plan didn't go well because I put two screws of the new speaker grilles through the speakers. Those are Pioneer 2 way 6x9's. They are about 12 years old and I discovered after this accident extremely brittle from baking in the back window. Now, I get to go shopping.
I worked one Christmas season in retail and I learned one thing. They'll push whatever product line they make the most profit on. I wanted Pioneers and most stereo stores were pushing Alpine crap on me. I just threw two Alpines in the garbage from the other car. I want Pioneer. You want to make a sale today? Get me Pioneers. Retail guys hate me.
Here are the new Pioneer 370 watt 6x9's.
Since I bought new rears, I decided to get new fronts. The old Infiniti's still sound nice, but they are as old as the rear speakers. The right speaker's grille surround was broken. They are also generally filthy and crappy looking.
I got display models for dirt cheap. $25 bucks. I even unscrewed these from the display myself. They are 180 watt Pioneer 6 1/2. In case you're wondering; that diamond plate on the door is not stock. The previous owner pulled the carpeted part of the door panel off and replaced it with this stuff. I suppose it could be worse.
It's sounds fantastic and is loud enough that I can't hear the car at 6000 rpm.
The last thing I did was replace the light for the alarm. This is actually more of a deterrent than the alarm. That bundle of wiring goes to the two amps, the cross over unit (under the driver's seat) and the rear amp.

I know what that's like, I took apart my door panels a couple weeks ago to try and fix my locks, and found out why my right speaker wasn't working, all this time I thought I was just going deaf in my right ear
If I can get a job here, I need to replace all the speakers in the Eagle
