HERE'S SOME GREAT INFO PASTED BELOW THAT A FELLOW TC'R POSTED/TIPPED US OFF TO ON A NEW OIL SPECIFICALLY MFG'D BY SPECTRO A WELL TRUSTED MOTORCYCLE OIL MFG FOR OUR OLDER FLAT TAPPET CAM'D MOTORS WITH AN 1,800PPM ZDDP LVL PER THE MFG WHICH IS GREAT. EVEN IF IT COMES IN LOWER AT 1,500-1,600PPM ZDDP THATS STILL VERY GOOD.
NOTE:1200PPM-1400PPM ZDDP IS THE GENERAL REC ZDDP LVL FOR FLAT TAPPET CAMS WITH THE HOT CAMS WITH HI SPRING RATES BEING AT THE HIGHER 1350-1400PPM LVL.
HERE'S THE AVAIL GRADES.
ITS PRICEY-COVEN OIL IS APPROX $5.40 QT/SEMI BLEND IS APPROX $6.40 QT.
* Motor-Guard® 10w40 (CONVEN)
* Motor-Guard® 20w50 (CONVEN)
* Motor-Guard® SAE 30 (CONVEN)
* Golden Motor-Guard® 10w40 (SEMI SYN/CONVEN BLEND)
* Golden Motor-Guard® 20w50 (SEMI SYN/CONVEN BLEND)
TEAM THIS UP WITH CHEVRONS DELO/MOTORHEAD/CLASSIC CAR OIL ALL IN 15W-40 GRADES
& PENNZOILS 25W-50 GT RACING OIL THAT HAS 1400PPM+ ZDDP THAT HAVE LOWER ZDDP LVL'S THEN THE SPECTRO BUT STILL HAVE DECENT ZDDP LVLS FOR LESS MUCH LESS $ THAT ARE ALSO VERY WELL SUITED FOR STOCK TO MID RANGE PERF FLAT TAPPET CAMS SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF OILS WITH GOOD ZDDP LVL'S TO PROPERLY PROTECT OUR FLAT TAPPET CAM'D MOTORS.
ALSO TO RECAP THE LATEST ZDDP OIL ADDITIVES ARE CAMSHIELD/ZDDPLUS/MOTORHEAD'S ZDDP ADDITIVE
NOTE:I DIDNT MENTION THE VALVOLINE RACING NSL/VR1 OILS BECAUSE THEY APPROX 1150-1250PPM ZDDP ON AVG WHEN TESTED WHICH IS MARGIANL IN SOME CASES. SO THEY ARE OK FOR STOCK TO VERY MILD FLAT TAPPET CAMS . BUT I DONT LIKE THE LOW/MARGIANL AVG 1200PPM ZDDP LVL THEY HAVE FOR HOT CAMS WITH HI SPRING RATES. _________________

Question:
Does Mobil 1 Contain the Additive for Flat Tappet Cams?
I build a few engines a year as I do muscle car repairs and I have been having a lot of camshaft failures. I just read that it is because the oil no longer has the additive for flat tappet cams. Can I use Mobil 1 to break in fresh rebuilt engines of '60s and '70s tech? Is it too slippery for new ring break-in? Will it give protection on new cam and lifters?
-- Frederick Neidlinger, Dover/Dover AFB, DE
Answer:
For older, flat tappet engines where wear may be more of a concern, we offer a number of oil products which are higher in phosphorus than API SM/ILSAC GF-4 oils. These include Mobil 1 15W-50 (1,200 ppm), Mobil 1 0W-40 (1,000 ppm) and Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W-30, 10W-30 and 10W-40 (900 ppm). For all newer engines and flat tappet engines in normal service, API SM/ISLAC GF-4 oils are preferred for better fuel economy and for the protection of catalytic systems with lower phosphorous (800 ppm). _________________

Today at 08:01 PM
The highest "walmart" oil would be mobil 1 15w-50 with around 1300/1200 ppm Zn/P then would come Rotella 5w-40 with around 1100 (?) then the mobil 1 EP/HM oils with around 900-100 then pennzoil premium etc...
Mobil 1 0w-40 may be a good choice also also maybe the Dino Rotella 15w-40 in the warmer months.
The high end oils like redline and amsoil contain lots of zddp also but are harder to come by.

for the cost of that he can go to the salvage and buy a roller motor and get a $100 cam off ebay... that's what I did for my s10. It ran 13.3 @106 with no stall, 87 octane, full exhaust and some crappy street tires that I couldn't put the power down until 2nd gear... I know a stall slicks and open exhaust it'll go mid to low 12's rather easily. But right now it's cheap and fun.. and I can say it's stock.. and it is, the motor is just one from the salvage I put a knockoff zz3 cam in, air gap intake, hei dizzy...
it's for fun and thrashing, not serious competition.
but yea, a roller is gangbusters better than a flat tappet... _________________ online auctions free classifieds |

You guys haven't heard of Brad Penn oil yet?
lots of zinc additive in it from the refinery.....think it's like $4 a quart, but cheap considering the alternatives. _________________ if it don't bother me, it shouldn't bother you |
