Went back out with my tape measure and a fresh outlook. This would be an easier mod before the body is on, so I think I'll postpone any final decision until after the PT.......meanwhile I can mock up the 350, then decide what I really expect from this car. You are exactly right on the optimal setup, 200R4 w/3.73 gears. Absolute best of both worlds with a ratio in the 10s......I'm in no hurry here, and building a pocket for the right rear of the pan wouldn't be that hard.
That being said, what stall would you recommend? _________________ Garage cleaning....gas powered leaf blowers aren't just for the yard anymore...... |

the 383 \
I'd go with an 11"
with a stall of 2300-2600
even a 2200 stall would be fine..
as I don't think you're building a racer..
3.00 rear gears go 2600
373 rear gears go 2200
unles you want it to really move out..
3000 stall but you'll trade , street manners..
and it'll kill fuel milage..
if you go overdrive . you'll want the lower stall, if you run a non lock up verter..
p.s. go raid a early 90's p/u of it's sbc serp belt set up..
the brackets are mostly alum. and polish up nice..
and one one belt.. |

So, using a lockup converter, 2600 with the 3.0, or 2200 if I switch to 3.73. Right?
Thx for the tip on the serpentine system. Bracket should work too, so that's great. It's all good!
Thx, man.

Got a couple of days to work in good weather, so went out and lifted the coupe. Here’s the underside before cleaning:
After dispensing with a couple of wasp nests, the wire-brushing began. I am still amazed at how good the metal is on this old car.
After cleaning, a good coat of POR-15. Good day so far!
After letting the paint dry overnight, went back today temporarily mate the body to the frame and bring it home to start the serious work. There was about 1” to 2” of dry dirt in the floorboards, doors, and trunk pan. Remarkable how it preserved the metal in the dry Western Kansas climate. That would have been a recipe for totally rusted out in another location, I’ll bet.
I’m pleased with the engine clearances, even seems to be plenty of room for the distributor. Looks like block-hugger headers though. Don’t think I’ll need to do anything to the firewall except smooth it and fill all the holes.
Home and unloaded. Two very good days. More to follow.

Looking good Ed. Mary's going to kick your butt for doing that kind of work in a white t-shirt!
Is that going to be on PT next year? _________________ 2002 Lightning

Probably not, maybe in two more years. Still gonna take a ton of money to finish it, besides, I'd like to run Earl for another one or two. If I make it three, that will be 5 for the ole truck.....by then we'll be old enough that we'll want the better ride and extra room the coupe will provide. _________________ Garage cleaning....gas powered leaf blowers aren't just for the yard anymore...... |

Good deal. If you get a bed cover, you'll have all the room you need. Ask me how I know! _________________ 2002 Lightning

Damn Ed, 'stat cho???
I guess all these things that the PT guys have been saying about you being a lazy air-jockey wasn't true after all - - -
OK, I was just kidding and let me say that you are the real deal. I plan on keeping up with this thread in the future.

Awesome! Glad to see progress on the car; it's going to be damn cool and nice when done. Keep up the good work! _________________ "The end is never as satisfying as the journey. Tried to edit the post below, but ended up with a duplication. I'm too dumb to find the 'delete post' button so this is a filler........ _________________ Garage cleaning....gas powered leaf blowers aren't just for the yard anymore......

Had several rainy days over the past month, so I spent some of them working on the firewall. I had decided NOT to go with an aftermarket smooth firewall….I’m sorta old-fashioned and like the one Henry put in it. Started with the usual stuff; hammers, dollies, weld and grind. Fill, sand, prime, sand, prime, sand, fill, prime, sand, re-weld….you know the drill.
The remaining holes will be used: small ones high on the passenger side will get buttons (in case I need 'em for something I've forgotten); the slotted ones hold the wiper motor; the humped ones (I think originally held the upper wishbone/radiator support rods) will get a pair of nice, subtle lights; the two on the drivers' side are the e-brake handle; and the one low in the center is for the throttle cable.
I’m satisfied with it. Now for the body….. _________________ Garage cleaning....gas powered leaf blowers aren't just for the yard anymore...... |
