just like some of the Top Fuel Dragster and Funny Car teams of today, when developing their 7500+hp engine, General Electric chose to use:

A Dynamometer!

http://www.reliableplant.com/article.aspx?articleid=20454&pagetitle=GE38%20engine%20sets%20horsepower%20record%20in%20early%20testing

Indeed, they make dynamometers for 8000hp engines!

yeah but
doesn't a turbine turn like 90,000 rpm
hp is torque times rpm
so the torque loads of a ge turbine is nowhere near the violence of a top fuel motor on 90 percent , they are not turning a hell of a lot of rpm
plus it is pretty rare a fuel motor survives the whole run - how can you get any kind of pull in less than three seconds , those mofos are dropping cylinders left and right the whole time
my info on fuel motors go back to 1999 when bernstein told us his racepac told him at a certain point on the track , under full clutch lockup , that it was making 8000 hp
there was a rumour last winter that prudhomme had ten thousand hp at firebird raceway
do you think that turbine was on a water brake ? and wasn't on more of a computer model ? I want to see a water brake hold a fuel motor on 90 percent
pro stockers depend on straining against the brake

it sounds like you've only been around water brake dynos. Those are the "entry level" of engine dynos.

Turbine engines may spin 90,000 RPM, but diesels spin about half what a top fuel engine spins. And they get dyno'd at far more torque, all the time.

I use Racepak all the time and there's no "horsepower" readout. Not sure what you or Bernstein are talking about. Perhaps he was using incremental times and the weight of the car to get a general number.
